Turns out we ran with people who are kind of a big deal

I was looking through old emails and an advertisement popped up for Spirit Airlines. Low and behold is a picture of the Team Spirit van!

Thanks to Dave, we figured out that we ran with the CEO of Spirit Airlines, Ben Baldanza!

Check out Dave in the back right corner of the news photo with the cowboy hat on (Yeah Champ! WHAMMY!)

If you check out my facebook pictures (which will soon be on Flickr, I promise), you can see Ben at the starting line wearing a blue shirt!

I did *not* see that coming!

Baxter, the Bad Man and the Seven Mile Bridge

Saturday morning, 820 am I started my third and final leg of the Ragnar relay. Action 4 News, van 1 "slept" in marathon near mile marker 50 while waiting for van 2 to complete their middle stretch. The leg started with a snag when we wrongly estimated Bobbys arrival time due to a late delivered text message. I had to hussle to the exchange, where Bobby had already arrived and was waiting to hand off the baton. This leg was the one I was waiting for. Runners travel 2 miles along the south side of US-1 until the end of marathon. After this, the seven mile bridge begins - a great behemoth over turquoise ocean. The morning was so clear that I could actually see the end of the bridge when I first set foot on it. Midway there is a ship channel, where a small 30 foot high "hill" rises from the otherwise flat roadbed. I focused on reaching this point, where I would take some water and my power gel. It was a surreal experience watching a point 4 miles away as I ran, as it would be over a half an hour until I made it to the hill. At this point in the race, the faster teams which had been started from Key Biscayne late were overtaking me. Some of these runners were setting 6 or sub-six mile paces, so they literally seemed like they were sprinting as they passed me. After the top of the hill I continued to feel great, continued to enjoy the amazing view and just cruised. I reached the end of the bridge, and a quarter mile later I reached exchange 25 where I handed off to Dan. This exchange was located near a small beach where I put my feet in the clear water of the Florida Straits. I dont know the exact water temperature, but Id guess it was 1 degree warmer than perfect - the dip felt great! I finished this leg at a pace of 8 minutes 20 seconds, which I was very happy with. Unlike my previous leg I felt great the entire time. After a few minutes enjoying the beach, I got back in the van with my team, ready to celebrate with them when they finished their final legs. -Andy

Wes Mantooth cant hang

I ran leg two through south Dade county starting around 400 and ending around 524 pm. The leg was 9.3 miles from the Homestead/Miami speedway to the middle of empty farm fields near the edge of the Everglades. The run started into a wicked west wind, but the path was nice, flat and straight. I knew after 2 miles that I would need water very soon, but had not brought any with me. My Georgetown "ultra" friend from leg 1 was carrying gatorade and gave me a swallow to hold me over. About halfway through the leg I crossed US-1 in Florida City (Glad it was still light out based on the streetwalkers I passed). After this point the jogging path ended. I saw my support van and flagged them down to pass me a water bottle, which tasted awesome! The running path from this point consisted of jogging next to a busy highway with no shoulder along a steep drainage ditch filled with shin-high weeds. Sometimes I would give myself a break from this terrain by running at the edge of the plowed fields. This was barely better than the ditch-side running however, since the field edges were filled with plow-scree containing fist size rocks and small potholes. Eventually I turned on a narrow dirt road and the foot-torture was over with about 1 mile to go. I handed off to Dan and he got to continue the offroad adventure by running next to a flood control canal through the everglades - at night! -Andy

Key Biscayne

This morning I started the Ragnar relay for Action 4 news team, departing from Crandon Park on Key Biscayne. The start waas a madhouse, with a gallery of onlookers taking pictures and setting off fireworks as the 8:00 AM runners started. I was with a group of approx. 20 others, and talked for awhile with an "ultra" Ragnar runner - who is part of a 6-man team and will run approx. 32 miles over the course of friday and saturday - insane! He was from Geeorgetown U and did his first Ragnar with a group of his college buddies too. I dressed for the "Anchorman" theme of our team with a Ron Burgundy wig and a glue on mustache, pictures coming soon. The morning run itself was nice and relaxed. I only had a 3 mile leg, and most of it was along the beach and through sea grapes and mangroves. I crossed the brigde to Virginia Key and had a great view of downtown Miami, it was spectacular! Van 1 of Action 4 is now eating lunch, and Ill get back on the course this evening at ~ 430 for a 9.3 mile leg. My endurance after that leg will tell me alot about how I might feel by the time we reach Key West. -Andy

First Legs Completed

Van #1 got off to a great start this morning and finished its first six legs (25 total miles) roughly 10 minutes ahead of schedule. We now get to relax over the next few hours before undertaking a more strenuous set of legs through the Everglades and Key Largo overnight. We should arrive in Key West in just over 24 hours!! We can't wait.

lesson learned

Our poor van reeks of wine... lesson of the day: wine bottles sitting next to a vent with really hot air will almost certainly shoot the cork out and spill on the carpet. At least it wasn't the red wine. Great start to the day...ugg.

go team go

van #2 is heading out to key biscayne to watch van #1 start at 8 am...kinda ridiculous that there's a toll to get out on the key..

I'm very important. I have many leather-bound books and my apartment smells of rich mahogany...

2 1/2 weeks til the race!!!

We're in the open division of the male category since we have only 4 girls running and our team pace is...well, we're not entirely sure...but we're going with 10:15ish.  Some of us are way faster than that and some of us are a bit slower (and some have injuries like myself with a bum ankle).  If we can pull that pace off then we will finish in 32ish hours...which equates to mid-day on Saturday.  Obviously with our pace we don't plan on being super competitive in this race...we're all just doing it for fun.  A good chunk of the team has never been to the Florida Keys (myself included), so this will be an amazing experience for sure!!

Go Action 4 News Team!!
